Local meat market Flowers Market in Tampa, Florida is known for its huge outdoor market, but now that it’s opened up to the public, the market has become a local treasure.
“We are a little more than a small store now, but we are still a family,” owner Jennifer Fonseca said.
“So, it’s been really cool to see it grow.”
The market has seen a rise in the number of people shopping for local meat, as well as an influx of new businesses and new customers.
Fon seca says the increase in demand is not only due to the increase of new customers, but also due to a spike in the amount of money being spent on meats, especially meats sold by local meat producers.
“I’m very proud of that,” she said.
The market started with about 10 people and grew to about 40, but this year has seen an increase in shoppers.
Fonsseca has noticed that the market is a little quieter this year.
“The people that come in are the kind of people that really like to be in the market and go shopping, because it’s fun to go to a meat market and buy a meat,” she explained.
The average price of a pound of fresh pork was about $6.60 last week, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The meat market also has a variety of local vendors selling local produce and meats.
“It’s definitely a different atmosphere here,” said customer Amy Tompkins.
“There’s a lot more people there, more people coming in.”
A lot of people come in because they are new to the area, Tompkin said.
And it makes her and her friends feel at home.
“That’s why we do what we do,” she added.
The local market is not the only one in the city.
“In the last few years we’ve seen a lot of growth in our downtown area,” said Fon Seca.
“A lot of things are happening in the downtown area, and I think it’s really good to see.”
This is a developing story.
